So happy to hear that! It can be a difficult transition but for me it was totally worth it 🙂 I wish you the best of luck with your baking business!

I too have been thinking long and hard about making a pursuit into baking more for people and making money. I”m 53 and love baking. I’ve done it for years and people tell me I’m at the wrong job, I should bake. My adult kids say the same thing. Taking the leap of faith is scary. Your story has encouraged me to take the next leap.

Hi April,

Things go awry in my kitchen all the time! But whenever something doesn’t turn out how I hope, I look at it as a learning experience and try to figure out what I learned and how I can avoid making the same mistake in the future. That helps me a lot 🙂

@Chelsweets,

Thank you for your reply. I love to bake and it has become a family tradition with my mom and I. Christmas comes and we hit the kitchen and bake up some great cookies but when I bake solo and try new recipes I become very hard on myself. I’m super critical and I just want it to be right. Do you have tips how to combat the stress of the mental battle with oneself.

Hi April,

I got into baking when I was 22 and working my first corporate job, it was a great stress reliever. I learned by doing, and just tried out tons of different recipes to get a feel for what I liked in different types of baked goods and frosting. I was super curious and that drove me to learn a ton and try out different techniques and decorating styles. I read cookbooks and watched tons of YT videos and baking shows. It all helped me grow a lot!!

I want to ask how did you get into baking? Where/How did you begin learning? I enjoy baking and have baked the majority of my life but just recently I have gained more of an interest. I would like to develop my skills but don’t know where to go or what my next step should be.

Thank you for your time

My name is Sharon (aka Pinkee). I started caking in 2016. This is a part time business for me. Nights and weekends. I love it. It can get exhausting and stressful but at the end of the day it is awesome.

I have been contemplating going full time but I am unsure, scared, nervous. The security of my day job is a huge deal. I have a 5 year old to take care of. On the other hand I don’t want to wonder what if.

I keep it in prayer but want to hear from others who are going through this as well.

My cake page on Facebook and Instagram is Pinkee’s Sweet Treats “Gotta cake for that?”

Thank you so much for talking my comment ?

I can relate with you completely. I am a similar situation, and I am planning to resign from my corporate job as soon as I am back to work after my leaves. It does feel uncertain! Also I have earned for the past 10 years of my life and the thought of not having a stable income bothers me, but I know baking is what I love and if I don’t get into it completely now, I won’t do it ever. More importantly, it’s the kind of impact, it’s having on my work and my performance in general. Honestly, I just was looking for a reassurance of what I am going to do is right. I typed on google and I’ll quote that here – Is it a good idea to leave your corporate job and pursue baking, and although I didn’t expect to see any results because of the specific nature of my inquiry, I came across your article the first. I read it and I am convinced to do what my heart desires.

Thank you so much for inspiring me.

I have watched many times over the last 5 years. My struggle with taking the leap is definitely financial. I have 3 kids living at home, a full time job with full benefits…..I do, however, turn away so much baking income per month because of the 40 hours I have to put in at my job. I am giving myself until the end of 2021 and I promised myself it would be the last year I work at this job!

I left the corporate world 15 years ago and through a friends encouragement, I started selling my home baked goods slowly but surely. I never looked backed! I have grown my skills base and knowledge in leaps and bounds in regarding baking!! During this period however, my husband lost his job and I was forced back into the corporate world for 5 years. Since lock down 2019, in South Africa, I am back to home baking after loosing my job.

As we share the same view on money, I decided to give it my all this time and no mucking around… with the full backing of my family. Both my daughters are very creative and just starting climbing in, helping me set up all the social media platforms etc.

I must just add one down side.. here in South Africa, we unfortunately do not have the numbers to ensure a consistent flow of income, so you need to be quite creative and industrious!

I wish you everything of the best and God’s richest blessings are yours!
Warm Regards,
Chantal

Truly inspirational and I’m in a similar situation too. I do product marketing and I got addicted to baking this year. Hoping to do it full-time in future once I’m skilled and established. Wish me luck!

I’m curious about 2 things 🙂 1. Do you have any formal training/etc in baking/cake decorating? 2. Your recipes are something you’ve developed over the years yourself using a base recipe from the internet or are they usually recipes inspired by other food bloggers?

I just finished reading this all I can say is wow. I am currently working at a university as an adjunct with a plan of getting PhD in my field to later work as an professor. Similar to your past job, my current pay is decent, coworkers and boss are awesome, and I like the job. However, I’ve also been very passionate about baking, ever since I can remember! I once asked myself “what would make me get up at 6am in the morning, full energy and glee?” Not grading papers… not running stats for my research… but baking! And I have on multiple occasions? I’ve also made some of my own baked goods and sold them during my free time to get away from grading papers and admin duties.

Long story short, I’m at a crossroad where I can quit my job and open a bakery with a friend (also a baker but he has more experience in food and beverage operations) or continue with my academic career. In the past, my friends and family mildly encouraged me to switch careers because they didn’t know about the academic or the baking world. With the pandemic, it seems like they now have much polarized opinions. Some tell me this is best time to open one with delivery and pickup options because many businesses are closing down (retirement, costs, not covid19 compliant, etc.) while some are telling me I’d be making a foolish move, throwing away a secure job to enter the food industry during a pandemic. The funny thing is those in my field tell me I should follow my passion and bake. Those in the food industry tell me to turn 180 and March straight back to academia. Honestly, I can see where they’re both coming from and there’s definitely merit to both sides of the argument. Still, it’s hard to decide.

If you don’t mind, could you offer some advice and wisdom for me? I’d really appreciate it!

I’ve been following you for a couple of years. I work in finance as well at a local bank near Jacksonville, NC. I started a cookie business in May and have since started partnering with local businesses and doing fundraisers to grow….and I’ve grown. So quickly that I haven’t had a chance to gather all my logistics and profit margins etc. I despise going to my day job since finding my love for cookies (decorated sugar cookies) I know that surviving on the cookies isn’t realistic because they take so long but I would love to create CONTENT like you for people to watch…I just don’t know where to get started to monetize videos/photos/blogs. I was hoping you wouldn’t mind giving me a few tidbits of advice if you have any?! I am also self taught and started learning about marketing, SEO, vlogging and videography, and recipe experimentation of course! I just don’t know how to turn all of this into profit for my business and desperately want to take the leap, especially since converting my garage into a bakery for myself. I want to do what I love!!

My biggest dream in life is to bake forever, hopefully opening a bakery someday. Ever since I was in middle school, I’ve always come back to baking as my career. Now, I am almost 21 and working two (almost) full-time jobs, sitting between 70-80 hours a week. I am trying SO hard to continue baking and bring my passion back to life, but the balance of it all is too much. I would love to go down to one job as I get things kick-started. Looking back, what advice do you have for young entrepreneurs who are ready to take that leap?! Thank you!
